Stockholm's most exclusive neighborhood. Here, elegant stone buildings from the turn of the century boast luxury boutiques and a nightlife with a high celebrity factor.
If Södermalm is Stockholm's heart, then Östermalm is its backbone — and, if we are honest, also its ego. Nothing here is done casually. The buildings are heavy with sandstone and classicism, designed to impress rather than welcome. The streets are broad, almost parade-like, and lined with shops whose window displays shine with a polished self-assurance. This is a neighborhood that knows exactly what it is.
Östermalm was built during the late 19th century's nationalist enthusiasm, when Sweden dreamed large about itself. Storgatan, Karlavägen, Narvavägen — the names breathe ambition. The architects were given free rein and produced a cohesive vision of grandeur that still dominates the cityscape: five-story buildings with ornate facades and stone lions watching from every archway entrance. It is said that every apartment here was once designed with a separate entrance for the servants, distinct from the owners' entrance. Class society in stone and staircase.
But Östermalm has learned to be more than a monument to itself. Östermalmshallen — the magnificent brick hall from 1888 — is one of Stockholm's finest places for a long Friday lunch. Here, the delicatessen counters are arranged like museum exhibitions: rows of glistening shellfish, cheeses stacked with care, and cold cuts with an aesthetic perfection resembling art. Sitting at one of the old counters, ordering toast Skagen topped with bleak roe and a glass of crispy white wine, and looking out at the hall's elegant iron balconies — it is an experience that does not age.
In the evenings, Östermalm changes face without quite losing its composure. Stureplan — the square with the famous mushroom-shaped canopy — transforms into one of northern Europe's most-watched nightlife centers. Limousines, guests with the right clothes and the right company, cameras flashing in the dark. It is a spectacle in itself, whether you are invited or not.
