WHAT IS BALLROOM?

The vibrant world of ballroom emerged from the hearts and resilience of Black and Latinx trans women in Harlem, New York, during the late 1960s. Born out of necessity and defiance against the pervasive racism encountered in mainstream pageant scenes, ballroom blossomed into a powerful underground subculture. It is a vital space created by and for the BIPOC LGBTQ+ community, serving as a dynamic platform for competition where participants showcase their artistry across diverse categories encompassing beauty, fashion, performance, and authentic selfhood.

The Bawdy Yawdy Ball is a sacred space built on respect and inclusivity. BALLROOM VOCABULARY

• OTA: Open to All
• FQ (Fem Queen): A trans woman
• BQ (Butch Queen): A gay man
• FF (Female Figure): Encompasses trans women, drag performers, and cis women
• MF (Male Figure): Includes trans men, butch queens, butches, and cis men
• NB: Non-binary
• GP: Grand Prize
• Effect: Refers to an outfit or overall look
• 10's: Receiving your 10's means you have successfully qualified to advance to the battle rounds.
• Chop: To be eliminated or "cut" from a category.
• Shade: To subtly or indirectly express attitude or deliver an insult.
